Basic Information & Location
St Swithun’s School is an independent day, weekly and full-boarding school for girls in Winchester, Hampshire. It is med after Saint Swithun, a Bishop of Winchester and patron saint of Winchester Cathedral.
School Motto
St Swithun’s wants all girls to learn about life beyond the school gates, to appreciate the rich variety of the world, to develop an understanding of compassion and to value justice. The school encourages all pupils to become involved in fundraising and community work. They should appreciate how their decisions and their actions can affect those around them. By the time a girl leaves she will be courageous, compassionate, committed and self-confident with a love of learning, a moral compass and a sense of humour.
Academic Matters
St Swithun’s has an outstanding academic record and the school is very proud that the girls achieve excellent results. They normally progress to their first-choice universities or colleges and the school enjoys a long and successful association with Oxford and Cambridge. However, St Swithun’s is even more proud of being “appropriately” academic, and this includes getting the balance right for each individual girl. The school aims to teach its pupils that no matter how glittering the academic prize, the journey matters more.
Boarding / Pastoral Care
Weekly and full boarding options are available at the School. Boarders at St Swithun’s often comment that boarding is their favourite element of school-life. Full boarders make up just under a third of our boarders. A host of activities are offered at weekends. Boarders are expected to fully contribute to the School’s boarding community and to seek to improve it for the benefit everyone.
Extracurricular
Girls enjoy an extensive co-curricular programme including activities as diverse as street dancing, golf, cookery, judo, photography, debating, fencing, art, cross-country running, textiles, dressmaking and home furnishing, touch rugby, pottery, philosophy, public speaking, exploring nature, technology, gardening, self-protection and ballroom dancing.
