Basic Information & Location
Set in 70 acres of beautiful Yorkshire Countryside, Woodhouse Grove School is conveniently located between Leeds and Bradford. Leeds is a major city in northern England, with various museums and shopping malls. The school is within 3 miles from Leeds Bradford Airport, and an hour drive from Manchester Airport. The train station just across the road from school provides direct links to Leeds (9 mins), Shipley (3 mins) and Skipton (30 mins). The school was founded in 1812, originally for the sons of Methodist Ministers, and has been fully co-educational since 1985. As a medium-sized school, it offers a tuition fee that is generally cheaper than other schools in England, and most of its pupils are local. Woodhouse Grove is also one of the many HMC schools.
Academic Development
Woodhouse Grove School aims to unlock the potential of each individual by offering every pupil life-changing opportunities and an environment where academic excellence is promoted through learning and shared experiences. Pupils are encouraged to think ahead and get prepared for the challenges and opportunities beyond school. Pupils’ academic results are satisfying, with a notable strength in Mathematics. In 2017, 32 % of pupils achieved A*-A in A Level, while 38% of pupils achieved A*-A in GCSEs.
Pastoral Care & Boarding
The school believes boarding is all about togetherness. There are two boarding houses at Woodhouse Grove— Broadwell House is for the boys and Miller House for the girls. Each boarding house has its own unique character, whilst providing a warm and homely environment with modern amenities, WiFi, kitchens, well-appointed bedrooms and common rooms. Each pupil is assigned a personal tutor who oversees their academic progress, while houseparents are responsible for all other aspects of a boarder’s life. A full and varied weekend boarding activities programme is organised for all pupils, whereas Sixth formers are given greater freedom to make their own weekend plans. Horse riding, go-karting, theatre visits and shopping are just some of the many regular excursions. Each school term concludes with a celebratory event, including the Christmas Ball and Easter Banquet. To ensure students’ safety and health, the School has its own medical centre, and the school nurse overseas medical care.
Extracurricular & personal development
The school offers a comprehensive range of co-curricular activities and thinks that every pupil should try and immerse themselves in the many opportunities, so that they can reap social, emotional, cultural and intellectual benefits, as well as develop different qualities. Pupils have achieved success in cricket, swimming, squash, cross-country, climbing, athletics, netball and tennis, and become representatives at city, county, regional or national levels. Countless opportunities in music and drama are also available, from staging school productions to performing in musical groups. Some students have even become members of city orchestras and cathedral choirs, including the national Children’s Choir and the English Youth Ballet and the Opera. Besides, the school has excellent facilities, such as a music recording studio, a theatre, all-weather pitches, a climbing wall, and a new swimming pool, to support the wide range of extracurricular activities.
