Basic Information & Location
Stonyhurst College is one of the Top Three Catholic schools in the UK, with more than 400 years of history. The school is located in Lancaster, north west of England, covers an area of 2500 acres. School has been one of the largest British boarding schools with stunning scenery, and Grade II historic building due to its long history. Being a school for 3-18 years old male and female students, Stonyhurst has accumulated a number of distinguished alumni in the history, such as Sir Arthur Doyle, the author of Holmes and Sir Frederick Weld, former President of New Zealand.
Academic Development
Stonyhurst is strict with students’ academic requirements. Each student has a personal tutor to help with their academic performance, and school provides learning reports to their parents regularly. The performance of students in public exams is remarkable. The passing rate of A-Level examination is 100% in the past few years, and most students can enter British universities to further study. About 10% of them get into top universities such as Oxford and Cambridge. In the 2017 A-Level, 65% of the school graduates got A*-B while 42% of the graduates got the excellent results of A*-A. Since September 2013, school offers IB diploma program and one-year GCSE curriculum, so that Sixth Formers could choose the suitable syllabus based on their abilities and interests. This makes students from Stonyhurst more competitive and capable in the future.
Pastoral Care & Boarding
In terms of accommodation, school provides students with fully equipped dormitories. For students of Year 9, they can share a dormitory with other three pupils. Sixth Form students can live in single room. All dormitories have network coverage. In addition, Stonyhurst doesn’t arrange dormitories just based on students’ age but considering other factors, which is quite different with other boarding schools. Each house has a House Master and a number of deputies to take good care of students. There are five boarding houses in the school, which are Lower Grammar, Grammar, Syntax, Poetry and Rhetoric.
Extracurricular & personal development
Apart from strict academic requirements, Stonyhurst School also attaches great attention to students’ computer knowledge, music, design and technology education, and even set them as required courses for freshmen. The most distinctive course would be glassblowing, which is proved popular among students, and it has become a major feature of extracurricular activities. Concerning music, school has scholarship of music and art to encourage students to develop skills in these fields. Students can utilise the independent music practice room with soundproof. Also, there are symphony orchestra and the choir in school for students to choose according to their interests.
