Basic Information & Transportation
Pocklington School is a day and boarding school founded in 1514 for students aged 3 to 18. Located 12 miles from York in East Yorkshire, it is a relatively distant school from London.
Academic Development
Senior School students are educated in “ability-based sets” and “mixed-ability” bases for different subjects. Main subjects such as English and mathematics are in ability-based sets. Initial placement into sets is based on entrance examination results and on the school report. Any subsequent changes are based on internal examination results and on general progress. Available subjects provided in GCSEs are all traditional academic subjects.
Progressing to Sixth Form, students are offered higher levels of autonomy. By devising personalised programmes of study from a wide range of A levels, and a carefully selected range of BTECS and enrichment courses, students are encouraged to refine their personal areas of interest and aspiration.
Pastoral Care & Boarding
All Sixth Form students, including boarders, are members of one of four school day houses with a Housemaster or Housemistresses and three additional tutors to provide pastoral and academic support.
Four single sex boarding houses are located on or adjacent to the school campus, two houses for each gender. Boarders can choose from full, weekly to flexi bases.
Extracurricular & personal development
At Pocklington, one afternoon per week is set aside for co-curricular activities. In Lower and Middle School, co-curricular activities are timetabled. In the lower Sixth Form, activities are compulsory but students can choose the activity; In the upper, participation in co-curricular activities is voluntary.
Sixth Formers are especially offered the prestigious opportunities to become ambassadors of the school communities. Leadership can develop students’ confidence and collaborative skills.
Sports is the focusing part to develop. The sports department at Pocklington is led by David Byas, ex Yorkshire County Cricket Captain. Students are taught to play the traditional sports. The school also provides a comprehensive fixtures list across all the major sports through all three terms and for all year groups.
