Basic Information & Transportation

As a historical school with origins going back to 970 AD, King’s Ely is a co-educational independent day and boarding school for students aged 2 to 18.

Located in Ely, Cambridgeshire, the school is just over an hour from London by train. It also takes a short walk from Ely train station, which provides direct rail links to Cambridge, London, Peterborough and The Fens.

Academic Development

The school’s aspirations for its students are that they will each make a noise in this world and make a difference in their homes, communities, workplaces and beyond. Its students are characterised by their energy, courage, integrity, self-knowledge, courtesy and sense of humour.

Students follow a structured, well-thought out study path to help them achieve their long-term goals. Pupils aged 14 to 15 can apply the Year 10 International Programme to prepare for the one year IGCSE programme in Year 11. To ensure quality teaching, small class size and daily tutorial support are provided.

Proceeding to the one-year IGCSE programme for pupils aged 15-16, students will focus on study five to eight subjects, students have nine lessons of English and five lessons of each subject per week.

Most of the Sixth Form students will take three A-level courses plus the Extended Project Qualification. Offering unique opportunity to significantly boost their university applications, it allows students to work on an interesting topic of their own choosing.

Pastoral Care & Boarding

The school works closely with both students and parents. The tutorial system also provides structure and continuity for each student, with a Form Tutor assigned to a senior student for three years.

Separate boarding houses for King’s Ely International boys and girls ensure they are provided with the expected privileges and comfort. Round-the-clock supervision, as well as a team of duty staff, House parents, matrons and House Tutors all provide care and advice to overseas students in any matter. Plus, some of the boarding houses date back to the Middle Ages.

Extracurricular & personal development

Sport, music and trips outside of Ely play a huge role in students’ school lives. Rowing, Rugby, Hockey, Football, Netball, Cricket and Tennis are the major sports at School. Music is particularly thriving at the School – over a third of students learn a musical instrument or receive vocal tuition. There are also regular student-led and professional concerts, workshops and masterclasses.

By valuing lessons outside classrooms, King’s Ely’s outdoor education is well recommended. During term-time and holidays, students are arranged to various galleries and historical sites, plus cultural visits to foreign countries.
