Basic Information & Location
Haileybury is an independent co-educational boarding school, located between London and Cambridge, in 500 acres of beautiful Hertfordshire countryside. Spectacular grounds are home to outstanding facilities, excellent teaching and superb pastoral care for its community of boarding and day pupils.
Founded in 1862, Haileybury is proud of its history, tradition and values, taking the best from the past whilst also looking to the future. Academic rigour and outstanding co-curricular provision are at the heart of the school, providing exceptional opportunities and a truly all-round education which enables pupils to discover enduring passions and talents.
Academic Development
The school offers a dedicated Lower School for Years 7 and 8, a wide range of GCSEs and IGCSEs and the choice of the IB Diploma or A levels in the Sixth Form. The Sunday Times has ranked Haileybury in the top six co-ed independent schools which offer the IB.
Pastoral Care & Boarding
More than two thirds of pupils are boarders with school life centred around 12 boarding houses and Lower School benefitting from having their own house. Pupils join at 11+, 13+, 14+ or 16+ entry points. Flexi-boarding is available in Lower School, which means families do not have to commit to full boarding.
Extra-curricular & Personal Development
A key part of the school’s philosophy is empowering each child to follow their passions and build self-confidence. Pupils benefit from professional sports coaching and the school regularly hosts speakers and performers from the arts, sporting and academic worlds.
There is a packed co-curricular programme of more than 130 options, from scuba diving and African drumming to bee-keeping, Mandarin and survival skills.
The school’s Model United nations programme sees more than 700 international students invited to Haileybury each spring to debate global issues – one of the largest programmes of its kind in the UK. Throughout the year, there is an abundance of music concerts, drama productions and public performances while more than 30 visiting specialists teach hundreds of instrument lessons every week.
At Haileybury, a caring environment is crucial to a pupil’s happiness and fulfilment. There is an emphasis on pastoral care with round-the-clock support from housemasters and housemistresses, to the chaplain, tutors, and a resident doctor. The school is a home-from-home, with a warm and friendly feel. Every child is given the confidence to find their identity on a personal journey of discovery.
