Fyling Hall School Overview

Fyling Hall is a co-educational boarding school located within the North York Moors National Park with around 180 pupils. The nearest towns are the historic seaside destinations of Whitby and Scarborough. The school and surrounding grounds overlook the picturesque coastline of Robin Hood’s Bay. The school is 2.5 hours by car from Manchester International Airport, 1 hour to York with easy rail access to London, and 1 hour to the nearest airport.

Fyling Hall School Motto

“The days that make us happy make us wise”. The school motto was founded by a teacher named Mab Bradley. She believed children learn best when they are happy and educated in a family-like atmosphere.

Fyling Hall School Courses & Programmes

Fyling Hall’s curriculum is based on the National Curriculum, Key Stages 1 and 2. The children are assessed at the end of each Key Stage using externally set but internally marked SAT materials.

Fyling Hall’s Senior School is for pupils aged from 11 to 18. 

GCSE –  Fyling Hall offers around 15 GCSE subjects. Students study the courses prescribed by the following Examination Boards: Edexcel, AQA and OCR.

The Sixth Form has about 20 students. The typical class size for post-16 study is 5 students, which means teachers can tailor each student’s educational programme around their needs. Alongside a comprehensive list of A Levels and AS Levels, we offer vocational qualifications in Creative and Performing Arts and Music.

Fyling Hall School ⁠Extracurricular

At Fyling Hall Independent School, diverse extracurricular activities and weekend activity programmes provide opportunities for new experiences. Sport, music, drama, and The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme are at the core of our extracurricular programme, but additional academic subjects and specialist clubs such as climbing, board games, and a ceilidh club ensure that there is something for everyone. 

Horse riding is also part of the Fyling Hall extracurricular activities tradition. Riding is available during the school day for one sports/ games lesson a week. Students spend some of their lessons refining skills in the arena and others riding in the beautiful countryside and beach.

Weekends are action-packed with extra-curricular activities: Shopping, fell running, ice skating, cinema, paintballing, surfing, mountain biking, rambling and canoeing all feature regularly on the weekend programme. At the same time, making sure students are well-rested.

Fyling Hall School Boarding

Fyling Hall boarding houses are situated within the school grounds. All boarding houses have wireless internet, common rooms, and facilities to make hot drinks and snacks. There are communal areas for the children to socialise. The sports hall is available in the evening and has a busy weekend programme. The Main House is the main boarding house for girls aged 11 to 18. They live in rooms of 2 to 4 pupils, with stunning views of the Yorkshire coastline. Mulgrave is the boarding house for boys aged 11 to 18 living in rooms of either 3 or 4. Year 12 and 13 boarders are accommodated in double rooms in their own part of the boarding houses and enjoy greater flexibility within the school day and at weekends. They have access to their own sixth-form study centre and common room.

Each weekend, there are excursions and activities and a varied programme throughout the term. Weekends at Fyling Hall are relaxed. There is a comprehensive programme of weekend activities that changes each half-term. Boarders can sign up for as many as they like. Activities are not compulsory, but boarders are recommended to join some activities. Those not on a trip will often visit the nearby towns of Whitby or Scarborough.

Fyling Hall School Pastoral Care

The quality of the school’s pastoral care is excellent. It strongly supports the pupils’ personal development in accordance with the school’s aim to develop the self-confidence of all pupils. (ISI Inspection) 

Due to its small size, the school can meet each child’s individual needs. Pupils quickly feel part of our community, which is the key to the family-like atmosphere. All pupils are allocated tutor groups, where a tutor is assigned to support, monitor, and guide them.
