Basic Information & Location
Caterham School is a famous independent boarding school situated in Surrey in the Southeast England. Caterham was established in 1811 as a boys’ school and became co-educational 35 years ago. It is situated on a beautiful 200-acre campus in Harestone Valley, 45 minutes away from London Heathrow Airport by train. Located close to London, it provides education for over 800 students aged between 3 -18 with more than 150 boarders. Students in general have an international perspective. A wide range of scholarships are available including Academic, Art and Design, Drama, Music, Performing Arts and Sports.
Many well-established schools are located in the same district, including Charterhouse and Woldingham School. Caterham may not be the best among the above single-sex schools, but it is considered the most outstanding co-educational school in the district.
Academic Development
Excellent results have positioned Caterham as one of the top independent co-educational schools in the country, with Science as their best subject area. Students are highly competitive, with 85% going to the top tier of UK university. The school has a long history of students attending Oxford University, Cambridge University, Imperial College and UCL. The school believes that a truly excellent education is not only about academic achievement. Caterham is a forward-thinking school that focuses on developing the whole person. In recent years, there have been major changes among the management team, from new headmaster to new admission officer. Parents should pay extra attention to that.
Pastoral Care & Boarding
There are three Boarding Houses at Caterham School for girls, junior boys and senior boys. They welcome boys and girls from all over Britain and 25 international countries. The boarding accommodation was recently refurbished. Houses provide a framework for friendships across age groups and for internal competitions. There are a wide range of activities ranged from debating to music, drama and sport. All students benefit from the onsite Health Centre which is staffed and run by friendly and qualified nurses.
Extracurricular & personal development
The school encourages student to embrace individuality and diversity. It provides a vast range of clubs, activities and trips on offer. The campus offers woodland, sports fields, high ropes course and outdoor learning centre. The exceptional sporting facilities which make all of this possible include grass pitches, a 25-metre indoor swimming pool, five netball courts and fully equipped sports hall. Risk taking and problem solving skills are enhanced by the School’s outdoor curriculum.
