Academic Development

Beechwood students have accepted a record number of places at some of the top universities and colleges in 2019. Joe C has accepted a place at Exeter University to read Maths and Physics and Charlotte S is delighted to begin her studies at Edinburgh University to read Business and Human Management. With an impressive result of A*AA, Adam W will be continuing his studies in Ancient History at Bristol University.  Celebrating an incredible A*A*ABB, Cynthia C will also be furthering her studies at Bristol to read pure Maths.

In the creative arts, Beechwood excelled in Theatre and Media Studies. Emily R will be studying Media and Communication at Goldsmiths and Holly X was thrilled to accept a place at leading fashion institute, Ravensbourne, for Fashion and Design.

In addition to A-Level success, many of the students achieved excellent scores in the EPQ studies. This award has been praised by the QCA, UCAS and universities who value its rigorous academic content and planning and research elements. Notable successes include Thea L and Maisy S, who were both awarded the highest grade, A*

With one of the most extensive choices of A-Level options in Tunbridge Wells, Beechwood School prides itself on helping the individual to fulfil their dreams, whether that be portfolio preparation for college or personal statement crafting to impress the admissions tutors at some of the UK’s most celebrated universities. Beechwood will always strive to do the very best for every one of its pupils.

The school’s GCSE pupils enjoyed considerable success, with an impressive 33 Grade 9s across the year group and 38% of all grades 7 or above. Beechwood continue to out-perform the national average and this year achieved 28% higher according to Government figures. The school is incredibly proud of all of its students’ achievements and wish them continued success with their future studies.

Beechwood is a non-selective school and the academic ability profile varies annually. What remains the same each year is that the school works hard in its small classes so that every student achieves their potential. It sets challenging targets for the students and encourages them to aim high!

An excellent, broad general curriculum is provided and examination results are strong, given the non-selective intake of the school. Beechwood is very proud of its academic record and the progress made by all its students. It offers 23 subjects at GCSE and 24 at A-level, and a broad, balanced curriculum in the school for younger students. Its leavers go on to study a range of courses at prestigious UK universities.

Pastoral Care & Boarding

Boarding helps boys and girls to become more independent whilst still benefiting from the care and attention of experienced, dedicated staff. Most boarders choose to stay at Beechwood at the weekends to take advantage of school facilities and the extensive grounds. The school organises a varied programme of cultural and entertaining activities to include outdoor activities, workshops in school, theatre outings and visits to places of interest. Boarders may visit friends or relatives on any weekend, with prior parental permission. Most boarders feel that they work better at school than at home. This is helped by supervised study periods in the evenings and at weekends for students up to Year 11. Sixth Form students are supported by boarding staff to work independently and discover their own study rhythm, in preparation for University. All boarders have extensive use of the library and ICT centre. Students in Year 10-11 may use their own laptop computers, which are collected in at bedtime, whereas Sixth Formers may use their laptops at any time. Wi-Fi access is available to all boarding students.

Extra-curricular & Personal Development

Every member of the school is encouraged to work to the best of his/her ability and aim high academically. The school also emphasises the importance of building key skills to support progression to Higher Education, training or chosen career.  These key skills are further enhanced through the Sixth Form Enrichment program that seeks to guide and inform the individual through the closing stages of their secondary education. A dedicated team of tutors, supported by the expertise and commitment of the subject staff, will help prepare the students for the transition to Higher Education. All aspects of the UCAS application are carefully managed and overseen by the Head of Sixth Form to ensure that its students make the most of their time at Beechwood Sacred Heart School and look forward to a happy and successful future.
