Basic Information & Location

Ackworth School is one of eight Quaker independent schools in the UK, and is situated the village of Ackworth near Pontefract, Yorkshire. It is co-educational and takes boarding students in senior school.

School Motto

To develop a well integrated and self-disciplined community, with an international dimension, in which the values of Quakers are seen to underpin the school.

To provide, and encourage the use of, the widest possible range of opportunities, e.g. sporting, creative and recreational, outside the formal curriculum.

Academic Matters

In the Fourth and Fifth Forms the core subjects are English, Mathematics and the three sciences combined. With regards to options, the school prefers some diversity of choice and expects students to choose one Creative subject, one Humanities subject and one Modern Foreign Language.

In sixth form, class sizes will be smaller and pupil will find that there is more discussion in lessons and, probably, a more informal atmosphere than pupils have been used to. Pupils will be studying only a few, probably four subjects.

For international students the school runs the International Centre, whose ambitions are threefold: helping international students adjust to the British education system, helping them adjust socially and assisting the students with improving their current English language skills.

Boarding / Pastoral Care

Boarding is a healthy mixture of students from other countries and from across the UK, all of whom are accommodated in rooms with either one or two others. Each house has a common room where students can play games, watch television or simply get together.

Extracurricular

The activities programme is an integral educational component of the curriculum, and helps students to operate within a team structure as part of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme. They can also take up drama in Performing Arts, or they can try their hand at fencing, hockey, football, basketball and many other sports.

In recent years there has been a great deal of interest shown in the model railway club, cyber club and gymnastics.
