【The Standard】 Coventry, a young university which is achieving top results

UK University

article-no831

There’s an interesting expression in English that you might not have heard before: “Send to Coventry.” It means ignoring someone.

To send someone to Coventry means giving them the silent treatment.

The expression is thought to come from the English Civil War back in 1642, but today, being sent to Coventry University if you’re an international student can only ever be a good thing.

This university is situated in the city of Coventry in the West Midlands (an estimated 1 from London by train).

Its rankings have been very good recently.

Although I always stress the importance of going beyond league tables when choosing a British school or university, it’s worth noting that Coventry University is the 15th best university in the United Kingdom, according to The Guardian University Guide 2020.

It also picked up an award for 2019 from the Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide for University of the Year for Student Experience.

That’s always good to see as it means that rather than just offering excellent courses, the overall experience of attending the university as an undergraduate is very good.

What Coventry University clearly shows, particularly looking at the UK from an outside, Hong Kong perspective, is that having a long and prestigious history isn’t necessarily important when it comes to achieving top results.

Although it has existed in various forms since 1843, it only gained university status in 1992.

That’s very young by UK standards. Oxford and Cambridge have centuries of history behind them and many of the top universities of today were founded as universities during Queen Victoria’s reign in the 19th century.

However, what may be seen as a negative point – having relatively little tradition to build on – can often be a good thing because it means that an institution is free to operate in a modern way and to take an innovative approach.

This is definitely the case with Coventry. It takes a very global stance with 45 percent of students being international.

The courses here are very up-to-date too. The bachelor in digital media, for example, is designed for the job market of tomorrow.

It is tailored to the world of online content and creative websites such as YouTube.

International relations is a degree course that covers politics, global citizenship and international humanitarian aid. There are many courses related to business too, from international business management to business law LLB.

Among Coventry’s courses that are ranked in the top 10 are physiotherapy and food science (dietetics, food and nutrition, nutrition and health), both of which are placed at No 7 in the UK by the Complete University Guide. Forensic science is at No 8 and occupational therapy at No 10.

Apart from the academic side, one of the great attractions of Coventry University is the city itself.

This diverse and energetic city has been awarded the City of Culture for 2021, a government scheme run by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport.

Every four years, cities compete and the winner then gets the opportunity to host numerous artistic and cultural events for a year.

Apart from an exciting year, the winners experience a long-term boost, both to the economy and culture of the city – a great attraction to international students looking to pack as much as they can into a few years of study in the UK.
