英國神奇四校-Cardiff Sixth Form College, Ruthin School

上回提到,英國有四間以反傳統模式運作而取得空前成功的寄宿學校,雖被傳統學校詬病,卻在短時間來躍升為教育界家喻戶曉的「神奇四校」。本文章將為大家介紹四校中的Cardiff Sixth Form College和Ruthin School。


 
Cardiff Sixth Form College
 
Cardiff成立短短十年左右,由最初以慈善為宗旨的私人補習社進化成A-Level league tables榜首的常客。簡單數據:Cardiff 由2010年開始擠身A-Level榜,今年已是連續第三年衛冕榜首。


 
鎗打出頭鳥,Cardiff的成功惹來很多傳統學校的抨擊。學校設備普通、成績掛帥、沒有傳統boarding life,全都是朝著傳統學校的逆向行走。然而,這種模式吸引家長的原因何在?


 
主要有兩點:誠實,可靠。好像地產廣告是吧?但Cardiff做的是另一層次的事。


 
學校毫不掩飾自己,即使國際生比例高、學校設施難登大雅之堂、課外活動難與傳統學校比較。有趣的是家長反而欣賞這種勇氣和透明度,亦認為這種開放式運作能提高學生、學校和家長三方之間的溝通。


 
另外就是可靠。Cardiff的成績,是對於以頂尖大學為目標的家長和學生的最大青睞。連續三年A-Level榜首的位置,每年約20位學生成功考入牛津劍橋,這些都是Cardiff可靠的實力証明。


 
Cardiff的成功,反映著不同現象。無論英國學校所推崇的是多麼高尚的教育情操、如何著重全人教育和啟發,倒頭來,成績都是絕不能缺少的一環。而家長學生所追求的亦會因應年齡而改變。年紀較小的學生,家長傾向以學校全面配套為選校基準,會考慮到成績、環境、活動、位置等。而去到Sixth Form的升大學關鍵時候,還是憑Cardiff引以為傲的學術成績為首要。


 
Ruthin School
 
Ruthin是個「成功需苦幹」的好例子。大概二十年前,Ruthin仍在League Tables的下游位置,並不斷收生甚至令自己吃不消。


 
直到新任校長Toby Belfield上任後,Ruthin的命運從此改變。


 
Ruthin現在是一間營運得宜,且非常積極而具野心的學校。學校同時提供日校和寄宿,共有約300名學校,大部份是國際生。而Ruthin的方式未必所有人都能應用。校長Belfield在海外生入學前會主動到訪,目的是親身確定學生有潛質和能力為學校作出貢獻。


 
比起傳統學校提倡的「本地生佔大多數」,Ruthin反而倒過來主動取錄海外學生。Belfield在收生時會留意學生來自哪裡,目的是確保校園提供多元文化環境,讓學生之間互相激發,做法和Cardiff類似。


 
Ruthin的模式和Concord有類似的地方,但Ruthin做得更加激進。這種做法的背後,反映出一些英國教育的概念即使完全倒過來運作也能夠成功。例如從前英國學校的賣點是英國本地生比例高,而Ruthin則以國際生比例作賣點。


 
總括來說,這類新興學府以顛覆舊文化的定位存在,難免觸動一些古老教育家的神經。而以傳統英式為賣點的學校亦難以忽視這些新興學校的成功,面對如暗湧一般的危機,也是推動學校互相鞭策而進步的好機會。下一篇文章我將探討Queen Ethelburga’s 和Concord的成功秘訣。

Considering its reputation, Oundle School may not catch up to Eton, Wycombe Abbey and else top elite schools. However, Oundle’s academic performance is among the best in the United Kingdom. To understand a boarding school, despite of looking at its educational tenet, diversified extra-curricular activities and academics results, it is essential to observe the boldness of the principal. 10 years ago, after Mr. Richard Cairns taking up the duty of the Brighton College’s principal, the school ranking raises from the 150th to the top 20th. In addition to promoting educational reformation, Mr Cairns is such a good principal, that he still strives for maintaining students’ curiosity at the same time.
