【Mameshare】給孩子賦予更多的角色

 

上回說到那個去了英國半年的9歲港孩,赴英後不但學懂照顧自己,而且自詡有能力照顧弟弟,令我十分感觸。

  

我的經驗是去到中四、中五,要做的決定就變得越來越大,例如要幫自己選科。來到遙遠的英國寄宿,雖然每天都可以用電話Skype或者WhatsApp父母幫你做選科決定,但學生都會自己為自己選科。可能是因為八個小時的時差,不想致電回港打攪家人;也因為身邊的外國同學自小已非常獨立,他們除了從書本上學習,還會從朋輩身上學習。學校也不會有一堂課叫獨立堂或者批判思考堂,甚或去規範你的個人責任或角色擔當,但他們會從生活上慢慢令學生知道,甚麼時候該做甚麼了。由9歲到埗英國開始,成長到10歲、11歲、12歲,慢慢地賦予你更多的責任與角色。

  

升班至小學高年級,學生已然12歲,他會覺得自己已經長大,這時候他們就會有不同的角色與責任要擔當了。例如麵包和奶之類的物資,通常會送到六年級學生的公用間,高小的同學開始要分配給初小的學生,學習廚房物品如何擺放,怎樣分工洗碗、洗碟、洗三文治機等等,慢慢明白自己的角色和責任。

  

這些技能學習不只是在生活上,還包括在運動方面的團隊認同。例如學校每個星期六都有校際球賽,英國與香港不同的是,香港要經選拔才能進入籃球校隊、足球校隊和游泳校隊,但英國就分為第一、第二、第三和第四隊,即使你的球技糟糕,也必須與自己同等水平的第四隊隊伍作賽。箇中的學習不一定做是隊長看顧自己的隊友,而是即使做隊員也要練球,去學習隊型例如怎樣等、怎樣接界外球;又或者玩英式欖球時,學習去做鬥牛陣(Scrum)的前鋒去撞人,如果不練習隊型就會導致球隊在星期六輸球。如此當每個星期都有訓練,就會慢慢令學生開始建立責任感和角色認同。不止於此,學校除了建立第一隊至第四隊球隊,令每位學生都能參與其中,還有辯論隊、美術組、音樂班等等,更有好像哈利波特一樣的宿舍對決(House Competition)。

  

去英國讀書令人學到的,並非只是主菜的學術硬件增值,還有生活方面的軟件增值。
