Academic Matters

While maintaining valued traditions the College has always been at the forefront of educational development. It pioneered the world-renowned Nuffield Science programme and in 1992 it maintained its innovative approach by introducing the International Baccalaureate (IB) and quickly established ourselves as one of the leading IB schools in the world. For over the last two decades the school has offered both A levels and the IB and currently its Sixth Form pupils are evenly divided between the two.

Malvern College Courses And Programmes

GCSE

In Year 9, all students study a broad curriculum that includes English, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Geography, History, Religious Studies, Design & Technology, Art, Drama, Music, Physical Education, Debate, IT, and Life Skills. Many also opt to study French, Latin, Spanish, or German, while non-native English speakers receive English as an Additional Language support.

By Years 10 and 11, students can personalise their subject choices, selecting from English, Mathematics, at least two sciences, a modern or classical language, and continuing with Life Skills and Ethics.

This course is designed for pupils who can complete individual GCSE subjects within one year. Completing the programme does not guarantee entry into the Sixth Form. Pupils typically study at least six subjects, including English, Mathematics, two sciences, History or Geography, and French, Spanish, or Latin.

A Levels are a popular choice for students aiming for focused, in-depth study, especially if they are considering careers in highly specialised fields such as Engineering, Medicine, Law, or the Sciences. The programme spans two years, during which students usually choose three to four subjects, allowing them to dive deeply into areas of personal strength and interest.

At Malvern College, pupils have the flexibility to design their own subject combinations, selecting from a wide range of options including sciences, humanities, languages, arts, and social sciences. However, it is important to note that Economics and Business cannot be taken together due to overlapping content.

The IB is recommended for pupils planning to study in the United States, as it fits the US liberal arts model. Required subjects include Mathematics and an additional language besides the pupil’s mother tongue, such as Spanish or Italian.

Malvern College Boarding And Pastoral Care

Malvern is a traditional full boarding and day school with boarders and day pupils in the same Houses. Each pupil has a Houseman – their Housemistress or Housemaster who oversees the individual’s progress through the College and who will help prepare the pupil for life beyond school. The Deputy Houseman also works closely with pupils. In the House, there are also Assistants and Tutors who are always willing to answer questions or give advice. In addition to the House team, there are academic tutors, class teachers and staff in academic departments who are all available to help, many of whom run clinics to provide extra academic support.

Malvern College Extracurricular Activities

Malvern College has a deserved reputation as a school that encourages excellence and participation in sport. It encourages sporting ability to thrive in pupils of all levels.

There are excellent facilities here for training and playing sport that includes a beautiful cricket ground at the centre of the main campus. The famous Malvern Hills provide challenging terrain for Cross Country running and, in addition to the more usual sports, the boys and girls enjoy activities such as Canoeing, Swimming, Sailing, Kayak Polo, Fencing, Scuba Diving, Basketball, and Clay-pigeon Shooting.

Malvern encourages and celebrates creativity. Cultural awareness in the Creative Arts is an important feature at Malvern and is supported in the academic curriculum and beyond, by provision of a wide variety of activities that identify, engage, and nurture talent.

Malvern College Reviews

“I think what makes Malvern College unique is the sense of community here. Enrolling here has been the best decision I’ve ever made. It’s changed my life, I have learned so much here (and I don’t just mean for the exams!). I think my classmates would agree with me when I say that Malvern has done so much for all of us.”
Mari B.
“I was sure that I wanted to attend Malvern College on the day I visited. I really love seeing the nearby hills and the campus is great, it has everything you need, but most of all I really love the sense of closeness that the students have at Malvern. I can’t think of a better place to grow and to forge lasting friendships in.”
Luke P.
“My favourite thing about Malvern is the atmosphere of camaraderie and strong school spirit, through the glorious campus, with the Malvern spa water on tap can’t hurt either.”
