Pharmacology

Pharmacy is a professional discipline that integrates health sciences and chemistry, and aims to train students to apply medicines safely and effectively. University programmes cover a wide range of subjects, with core modules including chemistry, human biology, physiology, and pharmacology, which is the study of how drugs affect the body.

Students will gain an in depth understanding of the discovery and development of medicines, how drugs act on the human body, and the treatment of various diseases. In addition to a strong theoretical foundation, the curriculum places great emphasis on patient centred practice, training students to accurately dispense prescriptions, provide professional medication advice, and manage drug therapy to ensure patients receive safe and effective care.

Professional qualification in Hong Kong

To become a Registered Pharmacist in Hong Kong, local graduates must complete a Bachelor of Pharmacy programme accredited by the Pharmacy and Poisons Board of Hong Kong, currently offered by The University of Hong Kong and The Chinese University of Hong Kong, and complete one year of pre registration training after graduation before they are eligible for registration.

For overseas graduates, including those from the United Kingdom, they must already be registered or eligible for registration in their home jurisdiction, and must pass the licensing examination conducted by the Board in three subjects, namely Hong Kong pharmacy law, pharmacy practice, and pharmacology, in order to register in Hong Kong.

Professional qualification in UK

To become a registered pharmacist in the United Kingdom, the standard pathway is to complete a four year Master of Pharmacy (MPharm) degree accredited by the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC), followed by a one year Foundation Training Year, and to pass the registration assessment.

It must be emphasised that a UK pharmacist licence cannot be directly or automatically converted into a practising qualification in Hong Kong. Pharmacists holding a UK licence who wish to practise in Hong Kong must follow the pathway for overseas graduates mentioned above and pass the Hong Kong licensing examination before they can obtain registration.
