Nursing

Nursing is a profession based discipline, and its curriculum is designed to train students to become professional Registered Nurses. University nursing programmes place strong emphasis on the integration of theory and practice. In addition to studying foundational medical knowledge such as anatomy, physiology and pharmacology, students are required to undertake extensive clinical placements in various healthcare settings, including hospitals and community environments.

During clinical training, students apply the nursing skills and communication abilities learned in the classroom to real patient care under the supervision of experienced nurses. In summary, nursing education aims to cultivate nurses who possess professional judgement, empathy and proficient clinical skills, enabling them to independently assess patients’ needs and provide safe, effective and compassionate care.

Professional qualification in Hong Kong

After completing a nursing programme recognised by The Nursing Council of Hong Kong, graduates are eligible to apply to become a Registered Nurse (RN) or an Enrolled Nurse (EN). They must submit an application to The Nursing Council of Hong Kong and pass its assessment in order to obtain a practising certificate as a Registered Nurse (RN) or an Enrolled Nurse (EN). The specific qualification depends on whether they have completed a degree programme of at least three years or a diploma programme of at least two years.

Upon successful registration, they formally obtain the professional qualification to practise legally in Hong Kong and may carry out nursing duties in various healthcare institutions.

Professional qualification in UK

After completing a nursing degree recognised by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) in the United Kingdom, graduates must apply to the Council for registration. Once their application is approved and their names are entered onto the register, they officially become a Registered Nurse and are legally qualified to practise and work in healthcare settings in the UK.

It is important to emphasise that a UK nursing licence cannot be directly or automatically converted into a practising qualification in Hong Kong. Nurses holding a UK licence who wish to practise in Hong Kong must follow the route for non locally trained nurses, which includes passing the Hong Kong licensing examination mentioned above, or applying through the newly introduced Special Registration arrangement, in order to obtain Registered Nurse status in Hong Kong.
