Medicine

A medical degree programme aims to cultivate doctors with professional skills and strong medical ethics through structured training. During the pre clinical stage, students study foundational sciences such as anatomy, physiology, biochemistry and pathology, developing a thorough understanding of how the human body functions and the principles of disease.

Upon entering the clinical stage, students undertake clinical placements in teaching hospitals, where they acquire diagnostic skills and treatment planning under the guidance of experienced doctors, and rotate through major specialties including internal medicine, surgery and paediatrics. The medical curriculum integrates scientific theory with clinical practice, nurturing healthcare professionals dedicated to safeguarding life.

Professional qualification in Hong Kong

After completing a recognised medical degree in Hong Kong, graduates must first undertake a one year internship in hospitals under the Hospital Authority to gain clinical experience. Upon successful completion of the internship, they are eligible to apply for full registration with The Medical Council of Hong Kong. Once registration is approved, they become a Registered Medical Practitioner, which grants them the legal qualification to practise independently in Hong Kong.

Professional qualification in UK

After completing a recognised medical degree in the United Kingdom, graduates must first apply for provisional registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) and enter a two year Foundation Programme for structured workplace training. Upon successful completion of the first year of the Foundation Programme, they are eligible to apply for full registration, allowing them to practise independently in most healthcare settings in the UK.

In response to manpower shortages in the public healthcare sector, the Hong Kong Government has introduced a Special Registration pathway. Doctors holding designated recognised overseas medical qualifications may obtain full registration without having to pass the previous licensing examination requirement, provided that they serve for a specified period in public institutions such as the Hospital Authority, the Department of Health, The University of Hong Kong, or The Chinese University of Hong Kong, and obtain a specialist qualification.
