Economics

Economics is the study of how societies allocate scarce resources, examining how individuals, businesses, and governments make choices in a world where resources are limited but wants are unlimited. The discipline is broadly divided into two main areas: microeconomics, which focuses on the decision-making behaviour of individual consumers, firms, and markets—such as how prices are determined; and macroeconomics, which looks at the economy as a whole, addressing issues such as inflation, unemployment, and economic growth.

Throughout the course of study, students apply various economic models, including supply and demand theory, to analyse market phenomena, and use statistical methods to test theories and forecast future economic trends. Overall, studying Economics aims to develop the ability to understand the economic logic underlying social issues, thereby providing well-reasoned analysis and recommendations for business strategy, public policy, and personal financial decision-making.

Professional qualification in Hong Kong

In Hong Kong, Economics graduates are not required to obtain a specific professional licence. However, the training in Economics provides a strong foundation for careers in finance, accounting, and business analysis. Many graduates go on to pursue professional qualifications such as the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation or, after completing additional accounting coursework, obtain Certified Public Accountant (CPA) certification to significantly enhance their career competitiveness.

Professional qualification in UK

In the United Kingdom, an Economics degree is not a professional qualification that directly grants a specific licence to practise, but rather an academic discipline that provides a foundation for a wide range of career pathways. However, the rigorous analytical and quantitative training offered in an Economics programme serves as an excellent stepping stone into the fields of finance and accounting. Many graduates go on to pursue professional certifications such as the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), the Associate Chartered Accountant (ACA) qualification from the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW), or the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation.
