Computer Science

Computer Science is a discipline that explores computation, information processing, and their theoretical foundations. It is not merely about learning how to write code, but about understanding the fundamental principles of how computers solve problems.

The core curriculum includes algorithms, data structures, programming languages, and software engineering, equipping you with the skills to design, develop, and maintain efficient and reliable software systems. You will also study the fundamentals of computer systems, such as computer architecture, operating systems, and networks, and may specialise in cutting-edge fields including artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, data science, or computer graphics.

Overall, the discipline aims to cultivate your logical and computational thinking skills, preparing you to tackle technological challenges and take on innovative and developmental roles in the rapidly evolving technology industry.

Professional qualification in Hong Kong

In Hong Kong, Computer Science graduates are not required to obtain a single statutory licence to practise. However, they may pursue the “Certified Professional in Information Technology” (CPIT) qualification offered by the Hong Kong Computer Society to demonstrate their professional competence.

In addition, depending on their career aspirations, graduates can obtain internationally recognised professional certifications in areas such as networking (e.g. Cisco), cloud computing (e.g. AWS), information security (e.g. CISA), and project management (e.g. PMP).

Professional qualification in UK

In the United Kingdom, Computer Science graduates may pursue professional qualifications through the British Computer Society (BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT), such as becoming a Chartered IT Professional (CITP), which is a recognised mark of professional competence within the industry.

Graduates may also obtain globally recognised industry certifications based on their areas of expertise, including cloud computing (e.g. AWS or Azure), cybersecurity (e.g. CISSP), and project management (e.g. PMP).
