Basic Information & Location

Founded in 1888, St George’s is the largest all girls’ school in Scotland. It serves girls from 2 to 18 years old. Located in Edinburgh’s West End, it is based in a over-14-acre parkland campus. The school also has easy transport links; it is 6 miles from Edinburgh International airport and a 1 hour flight from London.

Academic Development

St George’s is following a flexible and bespoke curriculum following English and Scottish qualification systems. After GCSE, students can choose to pursue Scottish Highers, Advanced Highers and some A-Levels.

Students aged 16 to 17 years old will take five subjects at Scottish Higher, which is a university matriculation qualification. It is at the same time a gold standard for Scottish universities entrance and an increasingly recognized qualification for English universities.

Students aged 17 to 18 years old can take at least three Advanced Highers courses, or a combination of qualifications. They usually apply for university entry in the autumn term of Upper 6.

Student results are excellent. In 2018, 60% of students achieved Grade A in Higher Level; 62% achieved Grade A* to A in A-Level; 68% achieved Grade A in Advanced Higher Level. Over 90% of leavers can progress to their first choice place of university or college. Destinations including UK premier league Russell Group of universities, say Cambridge, Oxford, Imperial College, Edinburgh, Bristol, Durham, Exeter.

Pastoral Care & Boarding

The school has totally around 50 boarders from UK and the other parts of world. The girls are living in Houldsworth house, which is situated at the edge of the school’s private grounds. Since the boarding number is quite small, there is a real community in the hostel. It also provides a lot of different activities to do each weekend, and thus satisfying boarders with different interests.

Extracurricular & personal development

St George’s ensures that music, sport and drama all play an integral part in the girls’ lives. Another long tradition is debating. It also stresses on an extensive student exchange programme with partner international schools to establish cultural awareness and an international outlook.
