Guardianship

According to the UK law, international students below 18 must have a third-party guardian. A guardian must be a person who is holding a British passport, above 25 (varies by the regulation of schools) and living in the UK. Parents can assign relatives living in the UK to be the student’s guardian, or they can join guardianship programme organized by agencies with good reputation.

A guardian acts as the student’s overseas “parent”. His /Her duties are stated as follows:

1. Arrange airport transfer at the student’s arrival and departure

2. Attend parent-teacher conferences and other related activities

3. Manage the student’s academic progress

4. Arrange accommodation during holiday such as mid-term break, Christmas and Easter

5. Act as a communication bridge between the school and parents

6. Deal with emergencies for the student’s parents

Guardianship generally costs less than £ 2,000 per year (approximately HK$20,260). Additional fee may be charged for holiday accommodation and airport transfer. Depending on the location, one night usually costs £ 40 (approximately HK$405). Airport transfer is charged according to the distance. Homestay is usually arranged near the school. Guardians would also visit host families regularly.

Out of many guardianship agencies in the UK, parents can consider choosing one of the 40 agencies recognised by AEGIS (the Association for the Education and Guardianship of International Student). James-Lee Consultancy and Pippa’s Guardians are two popular agencies favoured by HK students.
