Basic Information & Location

Langley School is blessed with a 110-acre site, in the market town of Loddon, 10 miles south of the City of Norwich, Norfolk. Originally based in Norwich itself – founded in 1911 – the school moved to its current site after the Second World War. The first girls arrived at Langley School in 1978, with three girls joining the Sixth Form. Langley School merged with Thorpe House Girls School in 2010, creating a new site for the Prep School and increased girl numbers into the Senior School. The schools merged in 2017 and now provides a through-school education from ages 2-18.

Our educational environment is inclusive, supportive and allows every individual to flourish and succeed. We provide a first class, aspirational education rooted in intellectual development, nurture, challenge and empowerment through creativity, activity and service to others.

The character of the individual is also central to the Langley education – we want young people to be kind, curious and confident, ready to humbly serve their communities in the future.

Academic Development

The Langley intake is inclusive and allows the young person to develop at their own speed. The classroom curriculum has excellent support and allows everyone to be stretched and challenged. We have a wide range of subjects that cater for a variety of interests: Law, Psychology, BTEC sport. In 2019, 80% of GCSE grades were A* – C and 77% of A-Level grades were A*- C.

Whether Oxbridge or a local apprenticeship is the goal, the Langley education allows students to get there; we celebrate the success of each individual, whatever that is. Our students receive guidance at every step of their journey from the Sixth Form Team and the Head of Careers. Students are also encouraged to participate in academic challenges, Oxbridge support, public speaking, UCAS days, University visits and courses for part-time jobs to acquire transferable skills and experience.

Pastoral Care & Boarding

The boarding facilities, which have separate houses for boys and girls, include matrons and qualified nurses who provide 24-hour care, plus on-site resident teachers.

The accommodation offers excellent facilities, including newly refurbished common rooms, kitchens, laundry and study areas.

During weekends, resident staff offer a programme of activities, including visits, events and outings to encourage students to make effective use of leisure time.

Langley School is committed to prioritising wellbeing through excellent pastoral care, a proactive approach towards promoting resilience, openly communicating about wellbeing issues and providing support where needed. The school was recently awarded a National Wellbeing award.

The community of boarding pupils at Langley plays a vital role in the life of the school. It offers the perfect environment to live and learn together, giving pupils the chance to make lifelong friendships. Although it’s never easy to leave the comfort of family and friends, every effort is made to ensure that Langley feels like a home away from home for pupils. The utmost is done to cater for the needs of the boarding community, including providing them with a safe, friendly and supportive environment.

Extracurricular & personal development

Life at Langley focuses on a holistic education. Academic lessons are at the core, but every pupil will be involved in Co-curricular activities at the end of every day. This programme adds diversity and enrichment to a pupil’s daily routine, allowing them to participate in activities that are important to them.

Boys and girls from all Senior School year groups are assigned a house on arrival and stay there throughout their time at school. Each house has its own culture, and support will be given by Head of House and house staff when students need it. The school offers an unprecedented amount of enrichment activities for students and all students are encouraged to take a full and active part in the sports offered through the curriculum.

The Model United Nations group and Debating society are at the centre of Langley enrichment. We enter national conferences and our pupils are always dynamic, consultative and direct when needed. Confidence gained through all the activities at school allows the Langley leaver to be really for the world.

The creative arts are a real focus at the school with facilities and opportunities in music, drama and art. We have been awarded a gold Artsmark award that recognises this excellence. With outstanding indoor and outdoor sporting facilities, including a fully equipped gym, the School is a sporting one. Langley is particularly good at football, and runs a Football Academy headed up by former professional football player Grant Holt. Students have the opportunity to continue with their academic studies while achieving a BTEC in Sports Performance and Excellence, alongside weekly football coaching and training. Rugby is the main winter sport for boys at Langley School and the Leicester Tiger Academy coaches visit Langley students regularly as part of the Good2Great partnership, so students can enjoy high quality rugby coaching. A new Netball Academy at Langley has just launched for not only our own girls, but those from other schools as well, to offer enrichment in sport.
