【信報】識問要問課外活動

有人話,揀伴侶,睇他們對待應的態度,其性格便一目瞭然。計我話,揀學校,睇校方對課外活動的安排,亦能看淸他們對學生的誠意。

 

未來伴侶想討你歡心,自然會加倍對你好,但如果他/她連不必討好的待應也能友善相待,便看出這人品格的優秀。類似道理,課外活動不像學科課程受到管制,沒有排名榜會以課外活動質或量來作衡量比較,Ofsted對學校課外活動也沒有監管。正因它是可有可無、好壞都不會影響到學校排名和聲譽的這樣一塊雞肋,一間學校如果連課外活動也編排設想得周全,便反映出校方對學生福祉的真切關心和愛護了。

 

每當家長有機會實地做校訪,或可親身接觸到學校的代表,前來問我:「Samuel,到時我應該問啲乜?」我都會建議他們抓緊這機會了解學校課外活動的情況。大家試想想,學校的排名及公開試成績已經是通了天的資訊,無需細問。私立學校都是採小班教學,學生會以成績分班,同學仔若是尖子精英會獲得頞外栽培,這情形幾乎校校如此,詳問來也無謂。然而雖然間間學校都會有課外活動,且大都會以選擇多作標榜,但到底箇中情況如何,真是不問不知。以我的經驗,一間學校如果能夠清晰地交代其課外活動的安排、背後的理念,已經值得大大加分。假若這學校原來還對課外活動非常重視,願意投入資源,兼且有意識要透過各種活動來栽培同學的品格操守軟技能等,就足見此校相當值得信賴。

 

問題諸如:有幾多種課外活動?運動、音樂、藝術、社區服務等如何分配?各種活動是行精英制,定還是只要有興趣便人人可參與?同學仔如果在某運動或活動有出色表現,校方有沒有特別支援?個別活動是否每個周末都有比賽可以切磋?學校會否提與校外各種校際、地區甚至更高層次的比賽和交流的機會?⋯⋯這些課外活動的查詢,家長不但一定要懂得問,同時問完也要知道如何解讀有關答案。此外,不同年紀的學生,有時問題的重心也不一樣,下星期,我會繼續講講家長該如何就課外活動向學校發問。
