【信報:升學專家有話兒】繼續談Grit

上星期講過Grit這個字,欲罷不能,因為小弟覺得此字在人生太重要,也太能體現英國教育的精髓。一齊來重溫一下:Grit字可解作堅毅,亦有人將之譯作意志力或鬥志。 

英國學校著重訓練學生建立堅毅的個性,而且非得個講字,學校固然要求學生透過校園種種具挑戰性的活動,以及寄宿生活的各樣紀律要求,鍛煉出同學百折不撓的情操。英國政府亦大力推動學校栽培學生品格,教育部自2015年起便設立了2萬鎊獎金的獎項,特意用來表揚致力建立學生堅毅、不屈、樂天、自信、包容等個性的學校,講心又講金。

 

意志力定高低

要講Grit,有一個人不可不提,就是美國心理學家Angela Duckworth。她多年研究成功人士的成功之道,她曾經以西點軍校學生、全美串字比賽Spelling Bee參加者、在龍蛇混雜地區教書的老師作研究對象,最終發現,要預測一個人成功與否,原來不與其智力,或外貌,或體能,或社交智慧直接掛釣,他們意志力的高低,才真正決定他們最終能向自己理想邁進。換言之,意志力指數(Grit Scale)方才是真正的成功指標。

Duckworth的說話發人深省:「Grit是日出日入地以自己的未來作堅持,這堅持不是數以日計,不是數以周計,甚至不是數以月計,而是年復年地努力不懈將未來變成現實。Grit是把人生視作馬拉松長跑,而非短跑。」 

香港家長奉行「贏在起跑線」,這說法跟Duckworth的看法看似毫無抵觸,問題反而是家長要搞清,最終要子女贏的是一場什麼賽事。一百米短跑起跑線的表現確可決定成王敗寇,但如果想贏的是場馬拉松,起跑線贏了卻不足以論成敗,要下一代在漫長馬拉松賽道上都能咬緊牙關跑到最後,他們最重要為子女裝備的,正是Grit。至於Grit是怎樣煉成的?Duckworth教授說她同意史丹福大學Carol Dweck的看法,Grit是要靠孩子自己以努力賺來,而首要條件是他們要明白人生每個挫折挑戰都是成長的學習機會,明白了這道理,他們便不會被險阻障礙嚇怕,更能在逆境時堅持奮鬥下去。說到尾,一個人贏不贏在起跑線可能不重要,不怕輸、輸得起,最終才會贏。
