五件你不知道關於英國寄宿學校的事 (上) (中文版)

(一)老師可以是孩子最好的朋友 

師生之間討論足球隊喜好,不難想像;但可否想像在下雨的星期三早上,老師把學生從睡床上吵醒,再催逼他們連跑帶跌地走到濕淋淋的球場練習?事實如此!現今年輕人愈來愈難找到學習的好榜樣,擁有如此緊密的師生關係,乎復何求?
 

在英國的寄宿學校,老師都是多功能人士,掌全校運作的命脈。他們在課室傳授知識,離開課室就與舍監攜手合作,送孩子上床睡覺、叫孩子起床、甚至在孩子患病的晚上守候在旁。老師還是孩子的心靈鷄湯,面對想家或情緒不穩的學生,老師懂得與他們傾談,送上暖身又暖心的熱朱古力,或者借出可以支持學生放聲大哭的寬廣膊頭。家長可能難以想像這些教育工作者給孩子的全方位照顧,老師實際是孩子的避風港。
 

入讀寄宿學校充滿樂趣,一點也不平凡。師生長時間在校園生活,學科問題也局限在課堂時間,正因這全天候交流的模式,老師也不用把課堂內容編排得緊湊密集﹐反而鼓勵同學提問﹐亦有空間分享課內課外的資訊,充份培養學習的樂趣,也是愛學生的體現。


 

(二)孩子享受上學
 

學術表現卓越的寄宿學校,課程設計又深又闊。面對如此密集又艱深的課程內容,孩子卻仍然能掌握學科知識。究竟是甚麼原因, 在GCSE應付多達十三個科目仍然能享受其中?無他,學校與老師搞盡腦汁,把課堂從教科書轉移至有趣味的模式。例如,上化學堂,誰會喜歡打開化學書做筆記而不是到實驗室做實驗?從經驗中學習,是孩子的重要發展。寄宿學校由上而下都奉行趣味學習,老師有極大自主空間去創造讓學生樂在其中的教學環境。只要是有益於學生發展,寄宿學校都會讓學生去經驗。或許你不會相信,我曾聽說過有學校安排約五十名學生到建築地盤去參觀,目的是讓他們親歷其境,了解職業健康和安全的課題。


學生不應該讓國家課程為他們編排人生,反而需要空間去為自己做決定。一所學校的優劣,就看它能否為學生度身訂造適合的學習及活動時間表。家長宜盡可能了解學校資源和可供參與的活動,為子女安排平衡又充實的校內學習及課外活動。
 

最後,又回到起點﹐孩子能樂在課堂中間,肯定與融洽的師生關係有莫大關係。老師在學期開始階段,已費盡心思,協助宿生打破隔膜;不會留待半年以後的學校旅行才嘗試在班上破冰。英國寄宿學校決不會讓深沉冰冷的氣氛有機會在班上萌芽。
