Would you like a cup of tea?

「BB呀,我約咗Mabel去High Tea呀,你返去先啦,bye bye!」



好熟口面吧?星期六下午,在銅鑼灣街頭不難聽到小情侶的對話。不知從何時開始,High Tea文化成為了香港女士們感受英國文化的渠道,也是一種脫俗的高級享受,對吧?回想起在英國讀書的日子,下午茶的回憶如泉湧上心頭。



有一件事,好多人都聽過,就係英國人通常叫Afternoon Tea,是直譯下午茶,香港較喜歡叫High Tea。對於我這種食開學校下午茶的人來說,這不是想像中咁「high class」咁高貴。在英國,下午茶的定位和香港一樣,不是人人下午都做的「得閒飲茶」環節,而是肚子餓行過街邊有茶餐廳(英國則是coffee shop),才進去喝一杯。



「would you like a cup of tea?」說了幾十年的tea,原來不是那個tea。英國人的cup of tea是知tea with milk,即使是半個地球以外的英國人,和我們香港人一樣愛奶茶。但英式奶茶和港式都有不同。英式奶茶用茶包沖泡,再加少量奶,顏色較稀較淺、味道較淡,茶味奶味比較層次分明。而港式奶茶顏色較實在,味道亦較濃,茶和奶的混和做成了獨特的港式奶茶口味。當然啦,下午茶不是規定要喝奶茶,不少人也喜歡喝咖啡。



不論香港和英國,下午茶都通常都不會只有一杯茶。港式下午茶可能是奶茶咖啡配西多士,炸雞腿沙律,更甚者會去太興食碗餐蛋麵。較豪華的有三層甜點塔,有蛋糕、馬卡龍、曲奇等等。



而英國呢,比較簡單。主菜是杯茶,通常加塊餅乾。下午茶是寄宿學校學生福利之一,在三四點鐘放學後有十五到二十分鐘的下午茶時間,通常是一杯奶茶配custard cream(雲呢拿忌廉餅)、bourbons(朱古力忌廉餅餅),而我校大熱美點一定是chocolate digestives(朱古力消化餅),我敢講,朱古力餅一定係最正,歡迎挑機。



所以,英國人的一塊餅一杯茶和香港人的三層塔加拉花Latte比較,就像是普通火鍋和韓式海鮮九層塔之比,通常是興之所致,或對下午茶有熱情的朋友才會吃得較「豪」。一般而言,下午茶是午飯後晚飯前之間的輕食。



即使相隔著一個大西洋,下午茶文化在香港和英國都有著同樣地位,或多或少成為時代人的生活習慣。當你工作倦了累了,看看手錶下午三點三,不妨稍事休息,would you like a cup of tea?
