鬼同你OT之鬼佬唔OT

和普遍歐洲人一樣,英國人認為工作是生命的一部分,而非全部。所以有很多工作上的特色都是基於這種價值觀而建立的。相對來說,香港人普遍認為生活是為了工作,一天大部分時間都坐在辦公室埋頭苦幹。



例如工時。在Work-life balance的前提下,英國人的辦公時間通常是朝九晚五(話說香港還是朝九晚五的日子,該要數到十多年前了…)。而香港則非常「彈性」,合約上雖是朝九晚六,但無償OT早已暗中加長了工時。有些行業例如會計,甚至沒有放工時間,朝八朝八,你冇睇錯,做足廿四小時,直頭在公司過夜。



情況不限於辦公室。英國的服務業、零售業等門市通常七點關門。香港則最早也要八/九點,週末或假期可能營業至零晨。最明顯不過就時聖誕節:當香港的鋪頭通宵營業提高銷售時,英國人提早關門回家和家人歡渡聖誕。



工作態度同樣反映英國人的生活態度。以我的工作為例,term break時想聯絡學校可謂Mission impossible。無論你send email給校長、收生主任、甚至Matron(?),他們都會秒回:I am away from office from…….與香港人不同,英國人不會廿四小時on call回電話回電郵。



香港人,尤其一些特殊行業如投資銀行,為配合時差或突發事件,就要24/7隨時候命。「收工真係收工」似乎成為員工福利的一部分。



如果閣下真的想去英國工作,要注意香港和英國的面試都有很大不同。香港公司請人通常看學歷和經驗,可謂一個絕對的標準。以往大學生被看高一線,工作經驗也非常重要,顯示求職者歷練。反之,在英國,公司重視求職者的soft skills,例如解難能力,溝通技巧和人事關係處理等。

哇,聽到都頭痛,一味背書背答案就可以。拿著這種心情去英國找工作,以為背書就能過關,誰知…他問我支持哪隊足球隊。



相比起「大起底」式問及求職者一些個人背景、客觀資訊等,英國人較喜歡透過婉轉的問題方式了解求職者的個人性格、處事態度。



而這一切以外,我覺得香港和英國工作上最大的分別,在於香港人有一種微妙的拼搏心。雖然口裡說著老世腦細,一收工就開口罵上司乜乜乜、同事乜乜乜,但只要理想一致,就有種盲勁向夢想去衝。或許到最後沒有完美句號,仍然倔強冒險一一去征討。
