畫杯

「英國人教你畫一隻杯呢,就唔係真係教你畫杯嘅,而係教你先去摸下隻杯。」一句我常掛在咀邊解釋英國教育的話,同事們聽得發笑,感覺到有種認同,但又講到好玄,似懂非懂。

 

其實我又不是扮哲學大師,只是想指出英國教育的一大特色-hands on。我們都好清楚香港的填鴨式教育是甚麼,對其恨之入骨,但談到hands on式的教育,我們卻沒有一個實質例子說明這種校育如何特別,如何好。

 

在英國留學的日子裡,hands on是一種教育的大原則大方向,甚至已經植根英國人的基因,不必老是掛在咀邊。與港式教育的不同之處,在於active和passive。在香港,為了提高效率和節省成本,學生們要用最快,最少變數的方式去吸收知識和學習,填鴨式教育似乎是最好的。學生處於passive的位置,坐在位上聽課,不必外出不必field trip,透過書本看世界。

 

相反,在英國,老師們真的可以用一整堂課的時間,純粹帶學生走去附近的沙灘,摸一摸那兒的砂,拾一塊石頭看一看,就完一節課。而美術課畫杯也是,學生們不是直接拿起畫筆去畫畫,而是先放下筆,去摸一摸杯的質感,360度轉一轉杯,清楚甚麼是「杯」,才開始畫。

 

分別在於,書本是一些人憑自己的眼睛,憑自己的五感了解過世界後,將自己學習得來的經驗和知識寫下來的,與其他人分享。英國教育正正做著這樣的事。走出班房,親手親眼感受世界,然後知識直接走進腦袋。而香港教育則多了一層牆壁,看著別人的第一身經驗,藉別人的眼睛看世界。

 

這種知識來得快,但不夠深刻。文字是學習和認識世界的基礎,但自己沒有親身感受過的話,總是難以從冷冰冰的教科書文字中得到個人化的感受和體驗。杯子明明已經在你面前,你卻不去感受它,而是聽著開顏料的技巧和構圖的學問去畫,等於自己築起一道透明的牆,隔開了世界。

 

要將杯子畫得形神俱備,你需要有技術。但任你的畫筆再勁,未摸過杯的,你都未必知道杯是甚麼。英國教育的hands on,不是為了讓學生去玩,而是希望他們親身去感受世界。杯已經在面前了,真的不去摸一下?
