學位本身少,競爭大當然是一個主要因素,但如果要子女突圍而出,倒不是沒有方法。早前和Oundle School、Uppingham School和Radley College的代表們討論過後,得出一個市井的結論:這是一個套餐的問題。


正式西餐有前菜、餐湯餐酒、main course、甜品、咖啡。而學校揀學生,不論中外,總想要一個能提供套餐的學生。所以學生就去學十樣八樣東西,學得越多越好。邏輯應是這樣的。問題就來了:你知道前菜餐湯main dish是甚麼嗎?


當然越多越好啦,德文是前菜、大提琴是餐湯、成績表是main course,齊哂。事實是,在學校眼中,某程度上這些都是main course。德文是日本菜、大提琴是法國菜、成績表是印度菜,沒有前菜,全是主菜。


Main course太多,學校吃不下,一大疊證書一大堆技能,看到睏。反之,家長們常常忽略了前菜餐湯甜品那種畫龍點睛的重要性。例如,學生有否時事觸覺?有沒有分析能力?是否稱職的team player?人緣好不好?能否自理,是否時時要父母照顧?這些才是main course以外,套餐必要存在的成員。


了解了學校如何看待這些技能,就能對症下藥。我曾說過不要將學生當成學習機器,要讓他們有靈魂地存在。所以在學術和技能以外,也要為學生培養一系列的soft skills。團隊精神有助整體學校的學習氣氛;對學校的熱誠,勇於發問的自覺;還有一系列的personal skills:領導能力、人際溝通技巧、說話技能等等,才能夠襯托起他們的main course,將整個學生的package提升到另一層次。


太執著學生要學這學那,要成績好,等於廚師只執著要將main course煮好,而忽略了整個套餐的其他元素。不是main course大份就代表他最重要。甜品不好吃,帶不出after taste;餐酒太苦澀,引不起食慾。學生的package,要整個套餐配合得宜,才能顯得出他們的過人之處,才令人有種回甘,難以忘記的味道。
