乜都唔識,乜都要學
話說初初開始英國升學事業,創辦英識教育時,我只是一個經濟學畢業生,和半桶水的「Law友」。創業的三年來,最大的得著和讀boarding school一樣,就是「乜都唔識,乜都要學」。
 
 
去英國之前,明明一心覺得讀英、數、常,仲要少個中文科,easy啦!誰知一到埗開始上堂,實際情況是far more than you can imagine。
 
 
例如,要學打rugby、學做戲劇、學public speech、學騎馬、學debate,這些都是你日後未必常用的技能,但通通都要學識。細個成日諗,反正長大後都用唔著,學來做乜?

意義有二:
 
一,書到用時方恨少。一句老說話說出真理。你永遠不知道有一天會被邀請去講public speech,或者生意上需要陪客騎馬應酬。就算跟女朋友鬧交,學過debating的原則和如何擊破論點,你都叻啲啦。
 
 
二,學到的比表面看到的深層次。例如打Rugby表面上是做運動強身健體,實際上也學會團隊精神和反應;學辯論表面上學資料搜集和辯才、技巧,實際上也訓練臨場批判思考和邏輯理路。
 
 
套用在今天創業的路,也有相似的例子。起初要做好公司的形象和corporate materials,卡片、信紙、leaflets等,我慶幸當初在學校有學過電腦和Arts,令我對住AI和Photoshop等軟件都未至於頭暈身慶……而在製作過程中訓練到邏輯思維,因為面對著那些layers、顏色圖層、使用過的effect等,邏輯稍為不清晰都一定出事。
 

有時候要和學校、partners傾生意,少一點辯論技巧都不行。讀過書的你都知道,有時候schoolmasters 或者校監,尤其是英國人,對於你的一字一句都可以好敏感好大反應……那時候,就好慶幸自己有學過辯論和public speech。
 
 
這種講法,豈非justify了家長們日夜push孩子上興趣班的扭曲的社會現象?不同也,不同也。我所提倡的,是在技術層面以外再學習一些soft skills。光是上興趣班學藝是純粹hard skills。所以要活用「乜都唔識,乜都要學」的原則,使學習效果multiply,學足球同時學team spirit;學空手道同時學反應。要有這種multiplier,才學得其所學得聰明。而這種原則,也是我在英識教育四年來,besides all happiness and friends的最大得著。

Considering its reputation, Oundle School may not catch up to Eton, Wycombe Abbey and else top elite schools. However, Oundle’s academic performance is among the best in the United Kingdom. To understand a boarding school, despite of looking at its educational tenet, diversified extra-curricular activities and academics results, it is essential to observe the boldness of the principal. 10 years ago, after Mr. Richard Cairns taking up the duty of the Brighton College’s principal, the school ranking raises from the 150th to the top 20th. In addition to promoting educational reformation, Mr Cairns is such a good principal, that he still strives for maintaining students’ curiosity at the same time.
