【The Standard:Boarding Insider】In the swim at Godolphin

"Godolphin school has caught the attention of my daughter. What can you tell us about this school?"

Located on the eastern fringes of the medieval English city of Salisbury, Godolphin (Senior) School delivers a world-class all-round education to girls from nursery age through to Sixth Form.

Godolphin has the feel of being a traditional British boarding school. Its city location mixed with a countryside atmosphere works wonders for pupils' well-being. This, combined with its extraordinarily impressive grounds and a view of Salisbury Cathedral, would make Godolphin an appealing choice for any Hong Kong family.

The school is run by Emma Hattersley, a head who prefers to let children be themselves, whilst nurturing their sense of adventure and encouraging girls to take risks rather than grinding them down with hysteria related to exam results and careers.

Godolphin does seem to run on trust, and the expectations which the head and staff members have of pupils are certainly very reasonable.

In terms of success and achievement, Godolphin seemingly knows no bounds.

Music awards, a thriving drama department and national and county team and individual sporting champions are all part and parcel of life at the school.

The school's choir and lacrosse and netball teams are all strong performers noted for winning awards and competitions.

Participation is the name of the game and your daughter would not be left behind if she is not fanatical about sports or music. With a wide-ranging co- curricular program, which offers jewelry making, computing club and cake decoration, to name a few, there is something for everyone.

At Godolphin, I believe that girls can become mature young adults very quickly. This opinion may be supported by countless observations, but I do believe the inter-house activities program does wonders for all-round social development.

Through debating, drama, sport and even bake offs, they develop into sympathetic leaders. Also, by becoming a committee member for their house, girls can further hone their leadership qualities.

Hong Kong girls will not find themselves surrounded by international students at Godolphin as around 90 percent of pupils are British. International pupils enjoy the local environment and the opportunity to go on trips to such places as Southampton, London Stonehenge and Bath - all of which are within easy reach of Salisbury.
